The journey of "Hello" is a long one, it probably started from Ho là! ("stop" and "pay attention") went through holla, hollo, hollow, hillo, and hilloa . It changed track and passed through - halloo, hulloo. By the nineteenth century the variants included hallo, halloa and hullo, hulloa.
